SECURE YOUR WEBSITE WITH A SSL CERTIFICATE & DO NOT RISK HIGH PENALTIES !

For some time now the law has more possibilities to issue high fines for websites with poor security. In addition, the connections to the websites / applications that work with personal data must be encrypted. However, we have seen that the meanings and consequences of websites and / or applications with such a poor connection are unfortunately not yet known to everyone. However, as towering fines can be distributed for websites with such a bad connection, we will describe it more accurately.

WHEN ARE YOU RISKING PENALTIES?

The Law can impose a very high fine on you as the owner or entrepreneur of a website or application, if you or the person responsible for this has not reported a data breach yourself! The Law can also impose fines for failing to comply with the provisions of the Personal Data Protection Act.

These provisions state that there must therefore be a clear target for data processing. All the various people involved must also be clearly informed about this. This is already possible, for example, by means of a privacy page on which you clearly explain why you request the user data and what happens to the data that people leave on your website.

Law also says that it is necessary to offer an appropriate level of security, given the current state of technology and the nature of the data to be protected. What is ‘appropriate’ is not precisely described in this, but in practice this could mean that a less high fine is imposed for the unsafe processing or storage of an e-mail address than for the unsafe storage of bank and / or or credit card information from your customers.

SO WHAT IS A SSL CERTIFICATE?

SSL certificates are small (eg .crt) files that digitally associate a cryptographic key with the data of a company. When these are installed on a web server, these files activate the padlock and the https protocol and thus ensure secure connections between a web server and a browser. SSL is usually used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer, logins, etc. Partly due to the changed legislation, this makes it the new standard for the safe use of websites.

A company must therefore install the SSL certificate on its web server in order to offer safe sessions with browsers. Depending on the type of SSL certificate requested and issued, the company must go through different validation levels.

After the installation of the SSL you can connect to the website via https://www.yourdomain.com. This means that the server knows that a secure connection with the browser or website can be established.

After a secure connection has been established, the internet traffic between the server and the browser continues in a safe way.

Browsers therefore let visitors know that a website with SSL is protected via various indications / options.
The simplest way to recognize an SSL certificate is to use the web address that starts with https: // … instead of http: // … and also the lock that appears in the address bar.

MORE BENEFITS WITH A SSL CERTIFICATE:  HIGHER POSITION IN GOOGLE POSSIBLE!

In addition to complying with the new legislation and improved safety, an SSL certificate offers even more additional benefits:

The presence after installing an SSL certificate ensures that your website in Google is more likely to be at a higher position in the search results.

Websites with an SSL certificate are in any case in the significant advantage as comparable sites without such an SSL certificate.

Internet traffic via https: // by means of an SSL certificate thus becomes the new standard.

If you get your website a SSL and make it public to your visitors, you will show that you handle their data with care and that gives your visitors much more confidence.

HOW TO GET A SSL CERTIFICATE?

With regard to the request of an SSL certificate, there are a number of matters that matter. For example, a certificate is issued only to the person who is actually registered as ‘owner or holder’ of a domain. Moreover, a certificate is not infinitely valid, so the certificate must be renewed once every few years.
In addition, your website often needs to be adapted to a number of things in order to be able to install and run on https.

There are different types of SSL certificates, each with their own security level and associated costs.
We are happy to help you with the possibilities for your company.

The higher the level of the certificate, the more authentication steps must be completed before it is issued.
But often a basic SSL certificate will be enough. Do you still have doubts which certificate is most suitable for you?
